The eu plans to take final safeguard measures on steel imports


Politico website on January 4.Brussels announced on the same day that the eu planned to maintain tariff quotas on steel imports from July 2018 until July 2021.The European commission informed the wto of its plans to impose a 25 per cent tariff on steel imports exceeding the 2015 to 2017 average import figure of 105 per cent.The measure would apply to all non-eu members and would set separate national quotas for leading exporters such as Turkey.The safeguard measures are aimed at stabilising prices in the European market and preventing export diversion in response to us steel tariffs.Eu steel producers say the tariffs are effective in preventing steel from flooding into Europe and are demanding permanent safeguards from the European commission.Steel users, especially carmakers, want the restrictions lifted.The European commission today announced its support for steel producers, but gave an additional 5 per cent free import quota.The eu steel industry has yet to fully recover from the global steel crisis and is still facing downward pressure on prices, according to an eu investigation.The commission said member states would vote on the measures in mid-january.
